Lessons from the Slow Life in Southern Sri Lanka

When I planned a last-minute trip to Sri Lanka in the peak summer of April because I had some extra vacation days to spare, I was questioned — ‘why would you go from a hot India to a hotter Sri Lanka?’, ‘is it really worth visiting?’, ‘this is not the best time’ …and so on. My only response at the time was ‘all I want to do is lay down on a beautiful beach.’

I went to Sri Lanka in search of beautiful beaches at a point of burnout in my life, but I found so much more.

This was my first holiday where I have voluntarily woken up early morning to do yoga, catch the sunrise and watch the surfers. Does that tell you something about this place?

In Pursuit of Nature

When I saw pelicans atop street lights, peacocks crossing our path in lush green fields, monkeys on tree branches edging the balcony of our hotel — all on the first day — I knew I was a world away from the over-populated city life. When I arrived at Locale, our boutique hotel in Weligama along the South West coast, the surrounding was everything I had expected and more — soft clear cerulean blue skies above, azure ocean waters at our eye level across the street and a string of tall coconut trees lining our path. What I didn’t expect was to see surfers from the hotel balcony at the beach across the street, gearing up…
